Question: I am running win7 Ultimate and have previously been able to mark some files on the server (mapped to a drive) to be available offline. Suddenly one day this option has disapeared from the options when right-click a file or folder. My previously offline selections and sync remain as expected, but I am not able to select or deselect anymore.
Do you have any suggestion?
May be offline files group policy is configured to disallow user configuration of offline files...
Try finding out if any GP is enforced on your PC using gpresult command. If there is no such policy then this is clearly a bug.. You can try contacting Microsoft through your helpdesk channel if you are an enterprise customer..
There are other users who have reported the same issue in microsoft forum and no resolution yet..

I'm trying to make the user experience better for windows 7/offline file users.
In Vista the sync seemed to bog down the login process quite a bit and it seems to me that Windows 7 has much improved the time it takes to sync at login.
Can you recommend any best practices to improve end user experience.

Unfortunately, in Vista there are no group policies that control logon or logoff sync. I believe offline files does a quick sync, syncing only the files that have been changed on the client in offline mode....How long is it taking for the users to logon?
In Windows 7 logon sync is pushed to background so user does not see any delay in logon..
At user level what one can do as workaround is to login to the laptop first and then connect to the network..(I understand that this can't be an acceptable solution to everyone...)

We recently did a file server migration. I have been synchronizing my "My Documents" folder which points to my home folder by UNC. I did not change it before the file migration to a new server name, so it became invalid after the move. I was able to redirect it to the new server path and resynch, but I cannot figure out how to remove the old server synch.

CSCCMD.exe can help you to cleanup stale entries from csc cache. Run the command "csccmd.exe /delete:\oldserverpath /recurse"
forgot to add that csccmd tool works only for XP clients.
We are running Windows 7 Enterprise and using Folder Redirection to speed up the logon/logoff process for our users. Prior to this we were using full roaming profiles and users would store large amounts of data which would slow down the logon/logoff process.
We disable, via group policy, "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files feature" to our stationary workstations.
To allow our Laptop users to seamlessly logon while not on the domain and still access the redirected folders thus giving them the feel of a full roaming profile, we enable "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files feature" for ONLY laptop workstations. We also enable “Remove ‘Make Available Offline’” as so that users are unable to manually enable offline features for folders.
We are finding that users are still able to mark files on other shared drives as “Offline”, I’m guessing by just opening the file and making changes the file is stored in the offline cache? This is causing a number of issues with conflicts where users are not seeing the most up to date file when opening shared files, for I’m assuming they are opening up a cached version of the file.
Our goal would be to ONLY allow Redirected Folders to be available offline (which is a default when enabling Offline Files), and not allow ANY OTHER network shares/drives to be allowed to be offline.
